Camille STYLES Los Angeles, Pt. I
Introducing “Camille Styles Travel:” an insider’s guide to what’s hot in cities around the globe. We’ll talk food, fashion, hotels, & more, visiting classic must-see spots as well as the best under-the-radar finds. Our first installation focuses on one of my personal favorites, Los Angeles. From the best sushi spots to see-and-be-seen patio cafes, LA is a culinary mecca. And where else can you take a stroll on the beach, drive up to the Hollywood Hills, and shop-till-you-drop on Rodeo Drive, all in one afternoon?
EAT:
Axe
A healthy and hip way to start the day, Axe is the definition of laid-back, California style. Enjoy organic waffles and fresh-baked bread in minimalist surroundings. This is the place to peruse the LA Times, sip a superb Americano, and soak up the eclecticism that is Venice Beach. Just be sure not to make a faux-pas with the pronunciation: It may look like it’s named after a work tool, but locals say “A-shay!” 1009 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, (310) 664-9787, axerestaurant.com.
The Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel
Take in the breathtaking Santa Monica view as you nosh on Cobb Salads and Steak Tartare over lunch at this chic restaurant on the top floor of the Huntley Hotel. The glamorous restaurant evokes a beachside lounge, with gauzy white curtains, cabanas, Murano chandeliers, and an extensive cocktail list with global influences. I loved the pan-seared scallops, and rumor has it that the Pappardelle with Market Vegetables & Pesto is to-die-for. 1111 2nd St, Santa Monica, 310-394-5454, www.thehuntleyhotel.com.
CUT
At this sophisticated spin on a steakhouse, Wolfgang Puck unveils the best of beef, from Japanese Wagyu to dry-aged New York sirloin. Impeccable service, knowledgeable staff, and sides that perfectly complement all that meat: heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese and parmesan polenta, to name a few. Architect Richard Meier designed the sleek surroundings, with soaring ceilings, honey-colored tables, and dramatic portraits of celebs from George Clooney to Jack Nicholson. I could go on and on, but I’ll end with a true story from my last visit. Halfway through my Kobe Beef Short Ribs (which were melt-in-your-mouth tender and sweet as candy), Wolfgang himself stopped by the table to see how we were enjoying our meal. I remarked that it was one of the best I’d ever tasted, and he laughed and proclaimed, “Well that is because you are so young!” So classic. 9500 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310-276-8500. www.wolfgangpuck.com.
