Postcard1

Back home from a whirlwind tour of Northern California, and dying to share some unforgettable moments from the trip.  First stop is Napa Valley: home of rolling green vineyards, to-die-for food & wine, and an unhurried vibe that made me want to settle in and stay another week. Calistoga RanchUpon arrival we checked into the incredible Calistoga Ranch, a tranquil resort tucked into a Napa Valley canyon surrounded by majestic oaks.  The rustic-yet-modern design made us check stress at the door of our spa-like lodge.  Traveling weariness melted away as we sunk into our private jacuzzi, sipped complimentary champagne, and transitioned to our vacation state-of-mind.

We spent the afternoon touring the sleek, state-of-the-art winery at Quintessa.  Our knowledgeable guide explained the unique biodynamic winemaking methods, and showed off vast caves full of French oak barrels.  Of course, I couldn’t wait for a taste.

Quintessa Vineyards

The educational experience paid off when we wrapped up the tour with a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc, enjoyed from a hilltop deck with sweeping views of Quintessa’s rolling hills and cluster of lakes.  For a moment, I wondered how it was possible that everyone who saw this view of Napa didn’t pack their bags on the spot and move to the Valley.

Quintessa Vineyard-double

We had the amazing privilege of dining at the property’s private residence, occupied part of the year by the visionary Huneeus family who have owned the estate for 20 years.  We feasted on a summery napoleon with corn, avocado, beet, & tomato; grilled rack of lamb with carrot puree, & organic local berries with biscotti… all while sipping Quintessa’s signature Bordeaux-style Cabernet blend.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post as we head to picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea, spot grazing sheep and (try to spot) Clint Eastwood at his charming restaurant.

So pretty, I love Napa! Spent many years living in the San Francisco area and miss it.
